25 Modern Coastal Bedroom Trends From An Interior Designer

beach design

"The basic rule for making nautical lighting work is the same one that applies to so many other aspects of decorating—don't do too much of it at once," advises trendsetter Christopher Spitzmiller. "Include it sparingly to increase its impact." Simple touches like using rope instead of chains to hang lighting make a big impact. Simply schedule a Free Interior Design Consultation with our leading team of design experts today. Best-selling author Mary Kay Andrews outfitted her charming 1930s beach cottage with upcycled vintage finds like a framed retro bathing suit and galvanized ice cream containers repurposed into conversation-starting lamps.

Embrace Caned Furniture

The low and flat roofline allows the house to maintain a modest scale and to look more inviting. At the same time, the facades have been opened up in order to take advantage of the beautiful panoramic views over the ocean and to let sufficient light into all the different interior spaces. The home is framed by large wooden terraces on the outside and it has large windows and numerous skylights which let in lots of natural sunlight during the day but also offer great views from every part of the house. Modern beach houses are no longer tiny shacks for one or two people. Modern beach houses are all about enjoying the surrounding landscape. According to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), sea levels are rising almost an eighth of an inch every year.

MICHAEL DAWKINSWith more than 20 years of design experience,  Dawkins is a master at bringing interior spaces to life.

Beachy interiors, on the other hand, are breezier, lighter, and less precise. “A beachy design is rooted in creating a serene aesthetic through the use of breezy linens, light wood tones, and a muted color palette to inherently translate feelings of relaxation,” says Hamwey. In a beach house you’ll see more natural oak tones, relaxed linen textiles, and accents of Aegean blue compared to a coastal home. Even if you don't live seaside, you can still bring a coastal feeling into your home with these timeless design trends. Find inspiration in soft hues from the shore and fabrics in cheery patterns to mix and match. Sea blues pair with pops of coral, and sandy tones provide balance.

Just like light reflecting on the sandy beach, it illuminates this white interior design too. The kitchen has a spotless and pristine feel while evoking a coastal air thanks to its white and sandy color combo. It does so through a mixture of stone, wood, and tiles – resembling the cliffs and beach pebbles. A dream home with a modern look is easy to find, but also requires effort and a budget. Simplicity and organic aesthetics define the furniture and lighting choices, utilizing natural materials that are both luxurious and tactile. These custom design elements not only celebrate history and innovation but also honor the spirit of craft to reflect the artistic legacy of Venice Beach.

Honor Natural Elements

A small touch can bring a coastal look to contemporary beach interiors. This chic bedroom, for instance, has a fun scallop scatter pillow right at its center. White paint is great for a beach-y vibe, but how do you make an all-white room feel cozy? The owner of this Tennessee home reinforced the kitchen's lived-in feel with shiplap paneling. "The wood walls keep things from feeling sterile," says Mandy, who also introduced an assortment of honey-hued wooden accents to warm up the look. The design of this modern beach house from Victoria, Canada is really beautiful and inspiring.

Also, feel free to add color or black-and-white wall art that depicts beach scenes; palm print wallpaper; or decor accents in natural materials like driftwood, rattan, or jute. Coastal rooms often feature a color palette that is reminiscent of the colors of the seashore such as pale blues, greens, and shades of white and sandy beige. Natural materials such as weathered wood and natural textures such as rattan, jute, wicker, or rattan complement a coastal room, which may also feature warm gold metal accents that mimic the sun. With the use of natural materials like wood and rattan and a focus on maximizing natural light and minimizing clutter, these spaces are naturally suited to waterfront settings. But today’s coastal decor is a crowd-pleasing and ubiquitous style that can work in a variety of spaces.

Don't Shy Away From Dark Colors

Let’s jump into beach house interior design rich with a cool coastal vibe. We know shiplap is controversial, but the kind in this coastal bedroom is seriously reminiscent of driftwood and helps give the space a more rustic feeling. Dominique DeLaney cleverly gave the classic blue-and-white color scheme a twist by incorporating multiple textures, from the walls to the bed. Ashley Gilbreath decorated this bedroom in a more traditional style, bringing in coastal touches through the wallpaper, wall art, wicker basket, and soft color palette. Coastal style is a more elevated take on the escapist fantasy of living in a beach house. It features a limited palette of soft colors inspired by sand and sea, natural materials like weathered wood and rattan, and works especially well in breezy, light-flooded rooms—ideally, but not exclusively, with a dreamy ocean view.

The great hall would consist of 76,000 square feet of flexible space that could be used for auto shows, art shows, concerts, and other activities such as pickleball. Three Corners comprises 38 acres of waterfront property at Indian River Boulevard and 17th Street. The land is the most valuable public waterfront property on Florida's East Coast, according to the city.

Adding greenery to your coastal bedroom can really enhance the outdoor, cabana-like feel of the space. This bedroom by Maggie Cruz opens up to the pool, so a calm interior that didn't compete with the landscaping was essential. Whether you want a classic coastal look or one of its creative branches, you're going to find the bedroom inspiration you need below.

24 California Home Designs That Will Make You Consider West Coast Life

beach design

Beach home interiors, like this breezy blue kitchen, layer light to bring sunshine any time of day. It’s because their setting is warm or humid, where carpets would heat the room unnecessarily. Instead, tiled flooring takes precedence – just like this beach house design.

Embrace the Outdoors

A spiral staircase was removed to enhance the flow of the floor plan, while the floors were given a facelift with oak hardwood flooring. Interior designer Ashley Gilbreath reimagined this casual and serene seaside house as her family getaway in Rosemary Beach, a community in Walton County, Florida. The designer created a serene escape for her family of five, one that could withstand the element of the salty sea air and be durable enough for a family living — sandy feet and wet bathing suits. One of the main challenges in renovating the heritage building was to accommodate the creative diversity of those working at NeueHouse Venice Beach. To address this, the design primarily features open and free-form spaces, allowing seamless adaptation to various programs.

Top Styles

If you're also trying to capture that escapist vibes year-round, then know that the right home decor is one of the best ways to bottle those warm-weather feelings. Our favorite design aesthetic to look to for inspiration as soon as the average temperature gets above 60 is the breezy coastal style—not to be confused with the more retro-inspired surf style. While we'd love for our entire house to look like the set of a Nancy Meyers movie, we'd argue that one of the best places to embrace it is where you head to relax. Generally speaking, coastal design is more nautical, and leans into darker elements and touches that feel reminiscent of a captain’s quarters.

Best Beach Interior Design Ideas in 2024

If you want more tips on how to bring these ocean hues into your space, head over to our blue room ideas. Vacation houses helped write the book on high-impact wall details, from the floor-to-ceiling beadboard lining 19th-century summer cottages to toile-covered guest rooms of Victorian-era lake houses. Ornamental latticework paneling is a genius way to reinforce a room's kinship with the outdoors. The artwork captures the twist and twirls of the sea in this contemporary bathroom. Moreover, the vivid strokes of impressionist art sit well in beach-inspired interiors. Its color scheme mimics its surroundings thanks to teal chairs and a light cerulean L-shaped sofa matched with dark wood and stone hues.

Try this modern coastal look in your home by hanging a natural fiber shade and layer a lovely textured linen or cotton drapery on either side. Keep the curtains in the white or off-white shade to give it the modern coastal decor look. The copper ship lanterns in this bunk room have a traditional coastal flair. This playful wallcovering with repeating cranes brings in a bright coastal feeling. Ashley Gilbreath matched the colors in it to the ones in the bolster pillow on the bed, softening the transition from the walls to the otherwise neutral furniture choices.

Coastal Bedroom Designs That Are So Calming

The layers of blues, whites, and tans do more than enough to capture the style, but the ceramic bells hanging from rope above the bed do add a nice touch. Beautiful teal wainscoting paired with vibrant oranges in this coastal bedroom give it a fun bohemian aesthetic that's balanced by the greenery, artwork, and bright white walls, ceiling, and bedding. While design scheme by Claire Thomas is definitely for the free-spirited, it's still giving us cool beach-girl vibes. To lean more tropical coastal rather than California coastal, try a blue-and-green color scheme. In this bedroom, designer Alison Pickart and Katy Polsby, owner of the wallpaper and textiles company CW Stockwell, used green textiles and blue accents to craft a space that looks like it belongs in a luxurious hotel. No need to reserve coastal chic décor for just the bathroom, kitchen, or living space.

We hope they find this new beach what they remember,” said Sarah Toomsen, manager of planning and development at Milwaukee County Parks. Sherman explained that the city will need to raise water and wastewater rates to help cover the cost of the new water treatment facility. Residents were enraged, packing City Council meetings and demanding answers.

Glass and wood are a classic combination in beach house interior design. Here, a cut log coffee table forms a statement as the clear top lets us see its texture and detail. The décor also evokes a sense of the outdoors in this coastal interior design. This airy space by Erin Sander proves that you don't need a ton of decor in a coastal bedroom design.

The beach — which closed initially in 2020 after at least four drownings there — is set to reopen around Memorial Day. The project addressed erosion and riptide concerns at the beach and lowered the depth of the water. A new water treatment plant serves as the ultimate answer to questions about the city's drinking water. It also would be a huge economic driver and another step forward in addressing what city officials have described as long-ignored infrastructure needs. Haskell-CDM Smith did not get started until January, Hoisington noted. What makes this beach house stand out compared to many others is the fact it’s surrounded by lots of greenery and vegetation and this detail is reflected in the building’s design, more specifically its green roof.

Whether you're leaning into Nantucket vibes, channeling a nautical theme, or going for serene coast, tile is a great opportunity to infuse some character into the space. Take, for example, this wow-worthy tile featured in a coastal bathroom design by Roman and Williams. Instead of small accents, make a big splash with blue tiles in a white and wood bathroom. Here, hexagonal tiles are just what this interior needs for a fresh oceanic boost. In this Seaside, Florida, oasis designed by Tammy Connor, a hanging collection of colorful vintage spools provides a fun and unexpected backdrop that guests will love.

Designer Loi Thai (@loithai) believes in layering rooms with that just-right piece of antique furniture or collection of vintage art, but he equally embraces the practicality and accessibility of mass retailer finds. Here, in the living room of his coastal retreat, he set the scene by topping an economical jute rug with a striking blue-and-white striped dhurrie rug. For the comfortable seating arrangement, he paired a factory dolly-turned-coffee table with slipcovered seating and an indoor/outdoor wicker chair. It’s located in Cachagua, Chile and was designed and built by studio Martin Schmidt Radic Arquitectos Asociados. A destination that offers a relaxing oasis with bright interiors and stellar ocean views. California offers the perfect climate and location for relaxed living and homes that blur the lines between indoors and out.

Castaway Cay Disney's Private Island

disney cruise private island

In addition to a half-mile of sandy beaches with loungers and umbrellas, cruisers can enjoy private clamshells and bungalows for rent, as well as a free beach barbecue. Walkways make it easy for visitors to meander from one area to another, and excursions abound, including stingray encounters, banana boat rides and fishing, among other pursuits. Although the somewhat sheltered vibe is nice when you just want a day at the beach, it also means your time ashore is likely to be devoid of cultural immersion. If you prefer to visit populated islands and engage with the people who live there, a private island may feel like a wasted port day on your itinerary. Disney’s island is a serene tropical destination, and a port call here is considered one of the highlights of a Disney cruise.

Are there any bars on Castaway Cay, Disney’s private island?

This unique port of call combines everything you love about a tropical island getaway with the magic of Disney, making it the perfect beach destination. The six Serenity Bay cabanas are only available to guests ages 18 and up. They're numbered 22 through 27 and are located behind the adults-only beach and its rows of lounge chairs. If you're an active family, consider the Castaway Cay Getaway Package. The three-in-one rental package includes snorkel equipment and a float or inner-tube for the day, plus a one-hour bicycle rental.

There’s a kids club on the island

Wondering how you can enjoy an adults-only beach on a family vacation? Drop the kids off at Scuttle Cove, the island’s supervised kids club. Scuttle Cove offers splash pads, games and activities, but no pool or beach access.

Passengers will find an outpost of Jimmy Buffett-affiliated LandShark Bar & Grill, but all the food and drinks come with a fee, and you can't pay with your cruise card. Anyone not wishing to spend the extra cash can head back to the ship for a meal. Parents and kids alike will be delighted to know that the island operates youth clubs just like onboard the ships. Kids ages 3-12 can enjoy Scuttle’s Cove, a secure and supervised children’s activity area offering sand castle building, scavenger hunts, and more.

Can you stay on Disney’s private island, Castaway Cay?

Yes, multiple venues serve a complimentary barbecue lunch on Castaway Cay. Yes, Castaway Cay cabanas are available to rent both on the family beach and at Serenity Bay. From what I saw, the family beach cabanas could be a great way to have a more relaxing, less crowded experience on Castaway Cay. The Serenity Bay cabanas seemed less of an upgrade, given that the beach was empty and all the services are so close.

disney cruise private island

The price of a Disney cruise includes most things on Castaway Cay, including access to its beaches. Those looking for relaxation will love Serenity Bay – an adults-only area with gentle surf and swaying palm trees. Crew members are on hand at several stations to hand out towels as you're leaving the ship.

Private beachfront space and access to exclusive amenities offer an unforgettable way to enjoy time spent on Disney’s private island. From lounging in paradise to playing family-friendly games, a day in a cabana can make a lasting impression. Like private islands or private areas on islands, these stops offer clean bathrooms, shore excursions, shopping, dining and other activities for a fee.

There is a Lot To Do on Castaway Cay – But Maybe You Want to Do Nothing at All

All Disney Cruise Line ships except Disney Wonder will visit Castaway Cay. It's a staple on Bahamas and Caribbean itineraries, which is where the majority of Disney ships travel. Disney previously announced the construction of Lighthouse Point, a new private port being built on the island of Eleuthera in the Bahamas. On sailings where the ship stays late into the night, you won't want to miss the lighthouse light show and beach party. Cruisers can choose to go back on board to have lunch, or they can snag a free barbecue meal at one of two buffets on shore.

Disney Castaway Cay 5K

Just like on the Disney ships, there is an adults-only area on Disney island, Serenity Bay, for those seeking a little peace and quiet. Located about a mile from the main beach, this is the place to go for grown-up time, as well as beachside lounge chairs, two-person hammocks and possibly even a massage in one of the cabanas. Be sure to order a Castaway Cay Konk Kooler, a blend of rum and tropical fruit juices, at Air Bar. Around the island, there’s plenty of adult-centric fun to be had — including at the over-the-water Head’s Up Bar, my personal favorite. For guests ages three and up, bike rentals are a great way to enjoy the island’s natural beauty.

Affectionately known as the Castaway Cay Double Dip, there are always a number of special cruises each year which stop twice at Disney’s private island. There is a self-serve drinks station, just like on the pool deck of the ship for you to get soft drinks and water. A three-night preview cruise on the Disney Magic from Fort Lauderdale is scheduled for June 6, 2024 and will feature a sneak peek of Lighthouse Point with limited access to some areas. Throughout Summer 2024, Lighthouse Point will be a featured stop on select three-, four- and five-night sailings to The Bahamas and Caribbean on the Disney Magic out of Fort Lauderdale. These South Florida-based itineraries will vary stops between Lighthouse Point and Castaway Cay, with five special sailings including both Disney Cruise Line island destinations.

When I book, I always make sure Disney's private island in the Bahamas, Castaway Cay, is on the port of call. On my cruise, cabanas cost $797.50 for an eight-hour rental for up to six people. You could add up to four more people, for a total of 10, for $56 additional per person. For groups larger than six people, children under 3 are not charged; however, they count toward the maximum number of people allowed on the rental. Many of the boat-based excursions (such as parasailing and fishing trips) depart from the Marge's Barges and Sea Charters dock at the end of the cruise pier. The stingray adventure meets at the Castaway Ray's Stingray Adventure hut at the end of Boat Beach farthest from the ship; the protected stingray lagoon is just offshore.

And with a designated kids club on shore, the entire family is guaranteed to have a magical time. There is a variety of offerings that cruisers of all ages can enjoy, from adult-only areas to activities designed with little ones in mind. A delicious all-you-can-eat barbecue lunch and unlimited soft-serve ice cream are also included in your visit.

An adults-only beach, Serenity Bay, is on the adjacent side of the island, open to the sea, and separate from the family beach. Your day on Castaway Cay is idyllic because you have to make very few arrangements. Beach chairs, umbrellas, towels and a delicious lunch are all provided to you.

If you'd like to branch out a bit, try something from one of the multiple food trucks or the Lighthouse Bar (for an extra fee). Children ages 3 to 12 will splash and play at a kids’ club under the care of Disney Cruise Line counselors. The kids’ club will offer a splash pad inspired by favorite undersea creatures from “The Little Mermaid,” plenty of shade, as well as a dedicated dining area. Disney is developing Lighthouse Point on the southern tip of Eleuthera, a Bahamian island, as a second exclusive port of call.

Bathrooms and beach showers are found throughout the island, as are plenty of garbage and recycling bins. If you're a Disney fan hoping to buy some swag not found anywhere else, you'll be happy browsing the Castaway Cay shops. Prices on beach items, however, are incredibly marked up, so if you forget to bring toys or a hat, try to pick them up at an earlier port or go without. She Sells Sea Shells and Everything Else by the Scuttle's Cove tram stop and Buy the Seashore by Pelican Point are your go-tos for Disney merch and sundries. Midway between the two are a couple of Bahamian retail outlets grouped together.

Castaway Cay: A guide to Disney Cruise Line's private island

disney cruise private island

Guests can walk the entirety of the developed part of Castaway Cay, but there are also trams available for easier transportation. The first route goes from the dock to Scuttle’s Cove — near the front of the family beaches — and then to Pelican’s Point, about halfway down the family beaches. The second tram route goes back and forth between Pelican’s Point and Serenity Bay, the adult beach. If you’re at the Pelican’s Point stop, make sure you get on the right tram. The island of Castaway Cay offers a variety of transportation options for guests.

You Can Even Get Married on Castaway Cay

At Lighthouse Point, families will enjoy a day of fun in the sun as they relax on pristine beaches, embark on active adventures and enjoy Bahamian storytelling alongside favorite Disney characters. Much like Disney’s cruise ships and private island of Castaway Cay, Lighthouse Point will offer activities and areas for every age group. And a brightly-colored, interactive family water play area will include two slides, water drums, fountains and more, along with a dedicated space for toddlers. All cruise line private islands feature alfresco bars, souvenir shops and beach equipment rentals.

Scuttle’s Cove

This hour-long experience (available for a fee) invites explorers to get up close and personal with 60 stingrays as you feed, pet, and snorkel with these fascinating sea creatures. For an additional fee, you can also book an excursion, including parasailing, sailing, and fishing charters, or rent watercraft. Visiting Disney’s private island, Castaway Cay, is an unforgettable and magical experience. Castaway Cay has something to offer everyone, from family-friendly activities to adult-only seclusion. Disney’s Castaway Cay (/ˈkiː/), formerly Gorda Cay, is a private island near Great Abaco Island in the Bahamas. Disney owns the island and serves as an exclusive port for Disney Cruise Line ships.

It eliminates the stress and hassle of planning and booking a Disney cruise yourself. A vacation planner is truly the best way to go if you’re cruising with Disney for the first time. Planning ahead and researching different Castaway Cay packages will help travelers experience an enjoyable and cost-effective vacation. Located in the warm Bahamas and surrounded by a picturesque turquoise ocean, Castaway Cay is Disney’s own private island where guests can enjoy paradise.

Things to Do on Castaway Cay

The improvements allowed Disney ships to dock directly on the island, eliminating the need to tender passengers ashore. Disney’s goal is to make things as convenient for guests as possible on Castaway Cay. Since Disney Cruise Line operates the entire island, almost everything is already included in your cruise price. You’ll need to use your Key to the World Card (linked to your stateroom account) if you wish to pay for premium beverages, souvenirs, or excursions. You will only need cash if you mail a letter from the Castaway Cay post office.

The New Disney Treasure Cruise Ship Will Have A 'Coco'-Themed Restaurant

Castaway Cay offers 20 cabanas on the farthest end of the family beaches, just around the corner from Serenity Bay. The cabanas line a stretch of beach that is roped off, so regular cruisers cannot go there. I visited Serenity Bay at lunchtime, and the beach was not crowded at all. Plenty of loungers were unclaimed — likely because the majority of Disney cruisers were spending time together as families.

Beach Reads That Are Perfect For A Sunny Day Out

The farthest end of the beach is lined with cabanas and reserved for cabana guests. Disney Cruise Line is offering an expanding summer program in 2024, with ships serving destinations in North America and Europe. The tender island of Princess Cays, found on Eleuthera in the Bahamas (about 70 miles from Nassau), covers 40 acres.

Despite the enviable vistas afforded by the multiple beaches and pools, some of the best views can be had from a ride on a tethered helium balloon that will take you 450 feet up in the air. Harvest Caye, Norwegian's second private island, opened in 2016, providing a plethora of outdoor activities for visitors. The main function of these oases, most of which are located in the Bahamas, is to provide cruisers with a relaxing and exclusive experience that's clean, contained and carefully quality-controlled.

Castaway Cay is eco-friendly

One day of sun-drenched serenity at Castaway Cay also awaits your family on this once-in-a-lifetime sailing. Bars all over the island serve specialty cocktails, beer, soda, and other drinks. There is a post office on Castaway Cay operated by the Bahamian authorities. It’s located on the dock and may not be open every day, but guests can still mail letters and postcards using the drop box outside or with Guest Services on the ship.

And, before I head back to the ship, I stop at the Castaway Cay post office to send postcards back home. Fortunately, the island has a complimentary tram that I always use to get around the island. One of the biggest perks of Castaway Cay is that the ship docks right at the island. When you choose to apply (and are approved) for a new credit card through our site, we may receive compensation from our partners, and this may impact how or where these products appear.

Also, the water was not as clear or calm on this beach because it does not have a breakwater to protect it from the waves, so some adults might prefer the family beach area for swimming. Castaway Cay was the first cruise line private island to feature a pier where ships can dock. One ship at a time can visit Castaway Cay, and passengers can walk straight off the ship and onto the island. For example, Virgin Voyages developed the Beach Club at Bimini in the Bahamas in partnership with Resorts World. When a Virgin ship is docked, its passengers have exclusive use of the Beach Club. Passengers who visit with other cruise lines can purchase day passes as long as a Virgin ship isn't in port.

Disney’s private island, Castaway Cay, is a popular port of call for Disney’s Eastern and Western Caribbean cruises. Set upon the stunning sands of Gorda Cay, the 1,000-acre shipwreck-themed island is exclusive to Disney Cruise Line guests and crew members. The Conched Out Bar and Sand Bar are the main beachside bars along the family beach, serving beer, cocktails and frozen drinks. The Heads Up Bar serves the same, but is located atop Pelican Point, the rocky breakwater between the two halves of the family beach. The cabanas are the same size and come with nearly the same inclusions as the family beach cabanas.

When disembarking from the ship, passengers can take a complimentary tram to either the Castaway Family Beach or Serenity Bay Beach – an adult-only beach area on the far side of the island. Outside the cabana, guests have access to lounge chairs, a hammock and a freshwater shower. The cabana rental comes with access to snorkel equipment, sand toys and floats or inner tubes, plus a one-hour bike rental. In addition, the Extreme Getaway Package combines a one-hour stingray adventure with snorkel equipment, bicycle and float or inner-tube rentals. The cost is $95 for kids and adults ages 10 and up or $73 for kids ages 5 to 9.
